Outsourcing Improves Productivity, Slashes Costs and Lowers Headcount

I had a three-fold challenge as a managing editor: Cut costs, increase editorial pages produced to maintain a set advertising:editorial ratio, and keep the total company headcount under 100. I outsourced much of the editing and production work by recruiting and developing a stable of freelancers.

My plan allowed us to increase editorial pages produced by 43% while decreasing production costs by 40%. At the same time I decreased my staff’s headcount by 40% through attrition.
